Monterey
The Coastal Jewel of California

By Amy Lively Jensen

Escape to Monterey, California, a coastal paradise that enchants with its stunning seascapes, vibrant marine life and breath-taking landscapes. Approximately 100 miles south of San Francisco, it boasts 99 miles of prime Pacific coastline. Whether you are embarking on a whale watching tour, excursions on the 17-Mile Drive, or marveling at the wonders at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey promises to create memories that linger long after you leave.

Monterey Bay is renowned for its whale-watching opportunities. Year-round, these waters host a parade of magnificent species including the gray whales, humpbacks, orcas and the majestic blue whales-the largest creatures of Earth. My most awe-inspiring moments in Monterey were on a whale-watching adventure. Witnessing these magnificent whales rise from the depths before crashing back, sending cascades of water into the air, left me spellbound. The prime time to see humpback whales and the blue whales is mid-April to mid-December. Even in the off-season, Monterey’s marine life doesn’t disappoint.

According to KSWB News, passengers on a whale watching tour had a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with two playful humpback whales that spent nearly three hours swimming up and around the small boat while putting on an incredible display. Captain Delaney Trowbridge recounted, “the whales were seen flipping their fins and tails into the air before slamming them back into the water. They rolled around in the water, peeking their heads above the surface in a movement called ‘sky hopping.’ Their vocalizations, like an ocean melody, felt like they were singing just for us.”

No visit to Monterey is complete without stepping into the aquatic wonderland of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It offers a window into the rich marine life of the Pacific with over 200 exhibits and 80,000 plants and animals. Be mesmerized by the glowing jellyfish, leopard sharks weaving through kelp forests and impossibly playful antics of sea otters stealing the show with their endless acrobatics.

Venture just south of Monterey to the breathtaking Big Sur coastline where nature feels untamed and vast. With its dramatic cliffs and towering redwoods, the panoramic ocean views stretch endlessly. You can hike along the scenic trails of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and visit McWay Falls. The towering redwoods provide a canopy of shade as you hike, and the distant roar of the ocean waves is soothing.

Traverse one of the most scenic drives in the world by taking the 17-Mile Drive. Wind through the Del Monte Forest along the stunning coastline, offering sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. You’ll see opulent mansions and the world-famous Pebble Beach Golf Course, along with pelicans diving for food and seals and sea lions cavorting from the Pescadero Point lookout.

One of the most popular destinations in Monterey is Cannery Row. Once home to sardine canneries, today it’s a bustling area filled with waterfront luxury hotels, stylish boutiques and excellent restaurants. The history of this iconic street is richly captured in John Steinbeck’s novel, “Cannery Row,” making it a perfect spot for both history buffs and literary enthusiasts.

In Pacific Grove the Monarch butterflies steal the spotlight in “Butterfly Town.” Every October thousands of Monarch butterflies make a stop at the Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary during their migration to warmer climates. They hang in clusters from eucalyptus branches to maintain their body temperature and the effect is stunning. They flutter their shimmering wings, and the trees look like they are moving. While most Monarchs live only four to five weeks after they reach adulthood, the special generation that winters in Monterey County lives up to six months. Scientists still aren’t sure how each new migrating generation knows the way to warm weather spots.

The community has always welcomed the butterflies and advocated for their protection. Citizens of Pacific Grove voted for an additional tax to create the Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary which is cared for by dedicated volunteers. The Pacific Grove Police Department enforces strict regulations that prohibit the "molestation of butterflies." The fine? $1,000.

Culinary delight is at the heart of Monterey County. From the bounty of freshly caught seafood to farm-to-table produce, gourmet food is everywhere. Local specialties include artichokes, mushrooms, strawberries, calamari, halibut and abalone.

The Michelin star rated Sardine Factory restaurant has been a Monterey institution since 1968. As the Michelin reviewers stated: “the name and exterior of this ‘factory’ can be deceptive as it is pretty damn elegant. Imagine silk curtains, monogrammed seatbacks and other ornate touches, including a glassed-in greenhouse conservatory.” Try their legendary abalone bisque and crispy sand dabs.

Another Michelin star restaurant here, the Montrio Bistro, is a 1910 firehouse replete with curving architecture, a beautiful bar and stairs that lead up to private rooms. The kitchen prides itself on being green, sourcing many ingredients from local farmers and using sustainable seafood and prime meats. Expect tasty renditions of familiar favorites, like big, crisp pieces of golden-fried calamari with zesty chermoula.

As the sun begins its decent, there’s no better place to watch the changing light than The Inn at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach. Here, the tradition of the lone bagpiper playing at sunset adds a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack to the evening. His melody drifts over the dunes as guests sip fine wines beside a roaring fireplace.

Renowned vineyards and wineries large and small call Monterey County home. You can sample award-winning wines at any of the 65 tasting rooms. You can sample local favorites and international varietals and even create your own custom blends.
