2021 Eila Scarlet Pinot Noir
Throughout his time in London, owner Peter Sturn was exposed to European wines during his travels and tastings while becoming enamored with Burgundian Pinot Noir. After several decades, he returned to the US with an enthusiasm for crafting his own Pinot Noir, researching areas in California and Oregon. Considering the similarities in climate between Oregon and Burgundy for growing great Pinot Noir, Peter chose to move to Oregon in 2021 and create his own label with small lots of Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley.
This is the inaugural release of the 2021 Eila Scarlet Pinot Noir, derived from the Prophet Vineyard in Eola-Amity AVA (440–600-foot elevation) of Willamette Valley. The grapes were sourced from vineyard blocks planted to Pommard and Coury clones, fermented using 25% whole cluster and aged for 10-11 months in 20% new oak (Mercury Barrel). A modest 120 cases are produced.
The shimmering garnet color of the 2021 Eila Scarlet Pinot Noir reveals a delicate lift of vibrant aromas and a shimmering symphony of ripe orchard berries. The alluring bouquet of creme de cassis is interwoven with savory spices, olive and dried herbs. The medium-bodied palate exhibits a purity of fruit with an abundance of crushed cherries, pomegranate, purple violets and ground spices that are complemented with a supple background of refined tannins. The wine is complex and seamless in the core with lovely acidity and a fine line of minerality that keeps your attention as it glides across your palate. It remains bright and long on the finish.
