2022 Bernardus Soberanes Vineyard Pinot Noir

Founder Bernardus (Ben) Pon chose the Carmel Valley to create his namesake Bernardus Winery, with the intention of crafting premier class wines. The Carmel Valley orientation is facing the west with hot days and chilly nights and ideal for producing wines that can rival the best in the world. More than a quarter century later, he created an estate Bordeaux Blend, called Marinus (after his middle name) along with a great portfolio of single-vineyard–designated Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. In my research of the history of Bernardus Winery, I discovered that Pon was responsible for helping transform Carmel Valley from a “ride your horse to the bar” town into a “drive your Porsche to the spa” destination. Bernardus Lodge became a resort that could emulate the lap of luxury of finer European lodges without losing a shred of what makes the Valley authentically un-Europe and even more un-Carmel.

The 2022 Bernardus Soberanes Vineyard Pinot Noir is a full-bodied expression from this vineyard with a deep ruby color and intense aromas of bramble, black cherry, sweet baking spices, a hint of nutmeg and vanilla. The palate shows ripe juicy red fruit, spice, and a creamy core with a soft mouth-coating texture. It has perfect acidity giving it enough freshness and lift that all come together with a long finish. A solid Pinot Noir and one of the better interpretations from Soberanes Vineyard.
