2022 Nickel & Nickel John C Sullinger Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa Valley
I have interviewed many fascinating producers and winemakers through the years, yet a recent interview with winemaker Joe Harden of Nickel & Nickel Winery left me awe-struck. His dedication, enthusiasm toward winemaking and steadfast work ethic seem to transcend others who view this profession as an arduous task. He has remarkable calmness and demeanor with a competitive approach to continually excel in all that he does, which was a gift given to him through his athletic abilities. He has become a beacon of success in a Napa Valley environment that has left many behind.
Sullenger is an estate vineyard situated behind the winery in the heart of the Oakville, Napa Valley AVA and is named for John C. Sullenger, who settled the farmstead in the 1880’s. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is aged for 16 months in 55% new French Oak barrels. The 2022 John C. Sullinger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerful and polished expression of classic Napa Valley terroir. Garnet, opaque in color with a purple rim, this wine has an expressive bouquet of purple violets and crushed herbs. The palate offers a captivating symphony of ripe macerated blackberries and dark currants with nuances of thyme, bay leaf and tanned leather. The mid-palate is broad and layered with balanced acidity that adds to the freshness while underscoring the wine’s complexity. The lengthy finish and depth of this wine confirm the ageability of this wine over the next several decades.
